The Team
If you are reading this, there is a good chance that either you or your loved one is suffering from a behavioral health condition. I am a psychiatrist with training in treating children, adolescents and adults. The following are examples of common conditions and their presentations. If any of this feels familiar, I hope you find the help you need, and in the case we get to work together, let’s talk about it so we can figure out how to best help you.
Perhaps your child is easily bored and quickly becoming a day dreaming expert.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that may be easier to diagnose than to understand. It may be puzzling to witness your child become immersed in video games, meanwhile have trouble staying focused in school.
There are other domains of ADHD which include impulsivity and hyperactivity (more to come).
On the other hand, maybe you are certain of the ADHD diagnosis and do not like the idea of using medication. Yet, at the same time, it is painful to witness your child struggle and be hard on themselves.
A parent with ADHD may have difficulty with sitting down and helping their child with homework. It is not uncommon for a parent of a child with ADHD to also realize that they themselves have ADHD.
A spouse with ADHD may frequently interrupt conversation and misunderstand what their partner is attempting to convey. This could add stress to the relationship and lead to arguments stemming from miscommunication.
Another example would be of people who avoid lines or traffic at all cost. Being stuck in traffic is aggravating in general, and for those with ADHD, it could be unbearable, irritating and ultimately lead to road rage.
Do friends or family frequently tell you to “not worry”?
Do you use your phone to distract yourself and prevent feelings of anxiety?
Or maybe you are constantly taking action, “doing” and planning, to manage the stress.
Everyone has anxiety. Anxiety is designed to be an adaptive mechanism (ex. stranger danger). Parents are naturally anxious about their children and primed to be ready to pounce and protect when threats arise. They are taught and encouraged by society to be anxious, precise, obsessive, and perhaps perfectionistic to protect their children. Anxious parents may even judge other parents for not being “diligent” enough.
On the other hand, maybe you were raised in an anxious household, and realize that you inadvertently became an anxious parent and spent more time worrying than enjoying parenting-you worry the impact of your anxiety on your children.
Anxiety is prevalent, especially showing itself in our most cherished interpersonal relationships. When there is too much anxiety, it can lead to stressful relationships and situations, causing you to spin your wheels.
The good news is: working with someone who is nonjudgemental can help you learn how to ACCEPT your anxieties and not live under it.
Talk therapy is an effective way to learn how to work through anxiety. Excessive anxiety comes and goes, and usually persists throughout ones lifetime. It is important to feel safe and comfortable during our sessions, so that I can best understand your personal story. As we work together, you will learn that I have your best interest in mind. I will be present with you when you share your problems and your biggest fan when things go your way. Using a mindful-based approach, we aim to compassionately listen and acknowledge to ones anxious thoughts, rather than silence it.
Feel free to reach out to me If you relate to any of this. And, in the event we get to work together, let’s live more and worry less!
